ATS rejected me but I'm qualified: what recruiters won't tell you
2026-06-12 · 4 min read
Reddit is full of stories where someone reads a job description, thinks *this is me*, submits—and gets an instant rejection email. The ATS did not decide you are unqualified. It decided it **could not verify** the match.
**Common causes** - **Title mismatch** — your headline says "Software Developer" but the JD says "Backend Engineer." - **Parse failures** — tables, columns, or icons break text extraction. - **Semantic gaps** — you have the experience but used different vocabulary. - **Must-have buried** — critical skills listed in a skills dump instead of proven in bullets.
**What to do** Paste the JD, compare requirement-by-requirement to your bullets, and rewrite only claims you can defend in an interview. A higher fit score should correlate with fewer false negatives—not keyword spam.
Modern ATS tools compare meaning. Tailor language to the posting and keep layout single-column and parser-safe.
